5 Fun Facts to Celebrate National Pizza Month

October is the best month of the year, and we’re not open to alternative feedback on this. It’s got a mix of everything - good weather, holidays, reasons to give back and, of course, it’s National Pizza Month. Whether you’re a Deep Dish diehard or a Detroit-Style corner-piece fanatic, there’s no better excuse to dig into a few slices than celebrating pizza’s very own holiday. Here are five facts worth sharing at your next pizza night.

  1. National Pizza Month has been official since 1987.

The founder of Pizza Today magazine, Gerry Durnell, created National Pizza Month back in 1984 to mark the debut of the magazine’s first issue, and Congress made it official in 1987. Pizza enthusiasts everywhere have been leaning into it ever since - us included. Bonus fact: Hungry Howie’s was once awarded “Chain of the Year” by Pizza Today magazine.

  1. Pepperoni is America’s most popular pizza topping.

It’s true. Pepperoni beat out pineapple by a landslide and continues to top more pizzas than any other ingredient in the country. Regardless if you’re team pepperoni, pineapple or any other topping, Hungry Howie’s lets you build your own pizza (Flavored Crust® included).

  1. There are more than 70,000 pizza restaurants in the U.S.

If you had any doubt that Americans loved pizza, we hope this fact cleared it up for you. And while there are a lot of choices, there’s only one originator of Flavored Crust® (hint…it’s us). With nearly 500 locations throughout the nation, there’s a good chance there’s a Hungry Howie’s in your community.

  1. Detroit-Style pizza started in a factory, not a kitchen.

It started in the 1940s when local bakers tried swapping round pizza pans for rectangular steel trays borrowed from auto factories. The industrial tools were repurposed for the kitchen, giving rise to the now iconic square pizza shape. That same steel-pan technique is still what gives Detroit-Style pizza its signature crispy, caramelized edge - and it’s exactly the edge we built our new All Corners Pizza around. Every slice gets that perfect corner treatment.

  1. Hungry Howie’s pizza does more than fill bellies. It helps save lives.

This month, Hungry Howie’s is bringing back pink boxes for the 18th year in a row, marking the return of our annual Love, Hope & Pizza campaign benefiting the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NCBF). Running through October 30, locations nationwide will swap their standard boxes for pink ones, with a portion of proceeds from every pizza sold going directly to NBCF to fund awareness efforts, education and patient support programs.

As part of this year's campaign, Hungry Howie's is also partnering with SAY Detroit Family Health Clinic and Henry Ford Health’s Mobile Mammography to offer free pre-screenings and mammograms to the local community on October 15 from 2- 4 p.m. CT. It's proof that a pizza order can do a lot more than satisfy a craving.
